Restoration Unit

In order to fulfil one of the main objectives of the University, the Restoration Unit of the Research Department was envisioned in 1980. The main objective of this Unit is to restore the Buddhist Sanskrit texts that are lost in their original forms, from the Tibetan translations preserved in the KAGYUR and the TENGYUR collections. Priority has been given to restoring the works of Acharya Nagarjuna, Acharya Aryadeva, Acharya Shantarakshita, Acharya Kamalashila and Acharya Atisha. Many among these Indian scholars were instrumental in the spread of Buddhism in Tibet and for the preservation of invaluable Indian cultural heritage in the land of snow. It was for their tireless efforts that a huge number of Buddhist Sanskrit texts regardless of their contents, became available in Tibetan translations.

Eventually, the restoration work carried out by a few scholars came out with encouraging results. Restored works of the scholars of this unit are widely appreciated and have become well known in the academic circle of this field. Scholars of this unit have maintained the tradition of early Tibetan translators by working with Indian scholars for an authentic output of these works.
