Shantarakshita Library :: Computer Section

The Computer Section started functioning from the automation of the Shantarakshita Library. Since a decade (1997-1998) the library is fully computerized and entire activities of the library right from the acquisition to the circulation including web aware OPAC is moving smoothly through computers. Further, this section extends its services to other departments and sections of the University for the computer related activities.

Earlier (i.e. since 1997), the Computer Section was in the process of organizing computer orientation / training courses for the benefit of the University’s Acharya, Shastri, B.T.M.S., and B. Ed. students as well as its academic and administerial staff members. Till May 2006, the Computer Section has successfully provided training to a total number of 348 participants. From the previous academic session 2006-2007, the section has started the “CCA (Certificate of Computer Application) / DCA (Diploma of Computer Application)” course for the University's students.

The Computer Section of the library comprises three rooms: a server room and two rooms for conducting the computer classes and to provide the Internet & other computer related services to students as well as entitled members.

Computer Services

In order to facilitate the internet connectivity for accessing the web and mail services to the staff members of different departments / sections of the University, the campus network using fibre-optic cable was completed in August 2005. The departments and sections networked are: - Library, Director Office, Academic Unit, Registrar Office, Examination, Accounts, Store, Dictionary, A. P. Guest House, Ayurveda, Research Units etc. University is having the facility of Internet connectivity under UGC- Infonet scheme and provides with 512 Kbps SCPC through ERNET India, New Delhi, since September 2004. Prior to this, since 1998, the institute was availing the facility of Internet using IPA-VSAT provided through the NICSI, New Delhi.

The library management software “SLIM THUMI” (upgraded during the year 2004 from SLIM 3.0) was installed along with the library database on the server. Different sections of the library are having computers connected to this network, in order to perform the regular activities of the library. These sections of the library are performing their activities in the different modules of “SLIM THUMI” software.

 

The CCA/DCA course is offered to the University’s students since the academic session 2006-2007. The students from U. M. first year may avail the opportunity to pursue the aforesaid course. The course is running along with the regular studies of the students starting from U.M. first year. The course runs through one academic session consisting of two semesters. There are total four modules of the course along with one computer module including practical is to be completed. On successful completion of two modules, which is being covered in two years, students will be awarded CCA certificate (in case not opting for DCA or fail to complete all the four modules) and on successful completion of four modules, which is being covered in four years, students will be awarded DCA certificate.
