Shantarakshita Library :: Acquisition & Technical Section

The Resource Development and Management Department of the Shantarakshita Library of CUTS is engaged in the collection, preservation and dissemination of documents on Tibetan and Buddhist studies, Himalayan Region Studies, Indology and allied subjects to fulfill its mission statement of the parent institution.

The Library Advisory Committee termed as Library Committee is responsible for formulation of Acquisition Policies and other functions of the library, The Committee is constituted of the following members:

  1. The Director of the institute -- Chairperson
  2. The Registrar of the institute -- Member
  3. One expert of Buddhology & Tibetology from outside
  4. One expert of Library & Information Science
  5. The Librarian -- Member-Secretary

Priorities & Preferences for Acquisition of Documents

  1. All types of documents in Tibetan language in any subject irrespective of forms
  2. Documents on Tibetan and Buddhist studies in any language irrespective of forms.
  3. Documents on Philosophy, Religion, Culture, History, Geography, Arts, Anthropology and allied subjects having direct relation/bearing on Tibetology and Buddhology
  4. Documents of English, Hindi and related languages on the subjects of Himalayan Studies, Indology, Mongolian Studies, Sinology and Western Philosophy
  5. Documents of Sanskrit language and literature
  6. Important Reference materials
  7. Academic Course materials to support the curriculum of the institute

Acquisition Section

The Acquisition Section uses Acquisition Module of SLIM database to keep up its records of documents. The library holds 078540 printed documents, 007712 electronic documents and 009742 titles on microfiches and films.

Technical Section

The Technical Section of the Shantarakshita Library is responsible for the technical treatment of printed and non-print documents other than (?) Serial and Tibetan language. The library follows S. R. Ranganathan's Colon Classification, 6th edition, for classifying the documents and ACR-2, 1978 for cataloguing works. This fully computerised library has adopted SLIM database (System for Library & Information Management) software for technical treatment of all the documents in the library. This database has multi-lingual system as the library uses Tibetan, Devanagari and English scripts. At present, OPAC is available on local area networks and can be viewed from any node of the University's network. It is expected to be uploaded on the website of the University in very near future.
