SOWA-RIGPA AND BHOT JYOTISH

Department of Sowa-Rigpa was established in 1993 to promote and synthesize the Indo-Tibetan tradition of diagnosis and healing. The department functions under the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) under the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India. The department is among the seven Sowa-Rigpa Colleges and the only one in the state of Uttar Pradesh. It is well equipped with state-of-the-art labs, an exhaustive library and top-notch facilities along with a robust system of academics. The department offers under graduate BSRMS regular course followed by one-year Internship Program where the medium of instruction is Tibetan Language. As of 2023, 16 batches have already passed out and are well placed, professionally. At present, students from the Tibetan Communities and Trans-Himalayan region such as Ladakh, Kinnaur, Spiti, Arunachal Pradesh as well as International students from countries like Nepal, Bhutan etc. have joined the Program. The students are accommodated with the general students in a comfortable hostel for boys and girls, the canteen serving both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. There are ample extra-curricular facilities. As per NCISM mandate, there are further eight departments within the Sowa–Rigpa Department itself.

Department of Bhot-Jyotish, also known as Tibetan Astro-Science, was also established in 1993. Tibetan Astro-Science can be classified into three categories: astronomy (skar-rtsis), elemental astrology (byung-rtsis) and divination (dbyang char). It is highly influenced by Kalacakra system.

Faculty of Sowa-Rigpa and Bhot-Jyotish was established in 1993 and it consists of the following two departments:

Programme Outcomes:

  • UG (BSRMS – Sowa-Rigpa)

The research-based academics in Sowa-Rigpa, the most ancient alternative medical science of Tibet, trains the students in various branches of Science of Sowa-Rigpa, such as human Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Psychopathology, Epidemiology, Pharmacology, General Medicine, Invasive and Non-invasive Therapies etc. with the help of various emphatic techniques in diagnosis through pulse and urine analysis etc. It provides an intensive knowledge of the origin of Sowa-Rigpa, its growth and its different manifestations. It also enables the students to have a sound knowledge of different aspects of the medical system. The intensive guided training and field trips give the students first-hand knowledge of diagnosis, ailment, and treatment. The highly specialized program with competency-based syllabus designed by the NCISM is followed to train students in the emerging field of Sowa-Rigpa and pursue further specialization into specific study or topic. The various clinical, non-clinical and skill labs provide the opportunity to use classroom knowledge in the respective fields.

  • UG (Shastri – Bhot-Jyotish)

Since Tibetan Jyotish Shastra has a unique dimension based on the scientific calculation of the Kalachakra Tantra System, on the completion of the program, the students will be able to develop a historical and scientific consciousness of the development of Bhot-Jyotish in Tibet. A sound knowledge of various aspects of Tibetan Astro Science will enable them to seek and establish the connection between Astro science in different parts of the world. They will also be trained to pursue future possibilities in the field of Bhot-Jyotish after understanding its origin, development and spread in various geographical regions of Tibet and Himalayan Regions. They are provided with a guided comparative knowledge of the Indian system of Jyotish with special focus on almanack, planetary metrics and calculations of their planetary positions and their impact on human life and other sentient beings.

  • PG (Acharya – Bhot-Jyotish)

The thrust area of Tibetan Jyotish Shastra banks upon the very scientific calculation of the Kalachakra system, on the completion of the program, the students will be able to develop a higher critical understanding of the different aspects of the most crucial canonical text of Kalachakra Tantra with special focus on its origin, development and growth along with scientific system of calculation and various calibrations impacting the human life in multiple aspects of life. The program provides a better synergy and understanding of the cosmological as well as biological and existential dimensions of human life. The curriculum is also enriched with the hand on experience and exposure to various practical methods and instruments like of Bhot-Jyotish system. Consequently, the students are able to seek their future prospects in the emerging fields of Astro Science Research, Applied Astrology, Medical Astrology and Almanac studies.
